In 2002 the Snow Leopard Trust initiated the Snow Leopard Survival Strategy process which brought together snow leopard experts from around the world to develop a long-term plan to save the species.  To support the experts over the 18 months of strategy development, the Trust realized how important it was for all participants to have access to the extensive literature on snow leopards.  Because many of the experts were in remote and far flung corners of Asia with limited library availability, but adequate internet access, a web-based bibliography was determined to be the best way to meet the information needs.

Fortunately, much of the English language literature on snow leopards was originally published by the Trust as part of its Snow Leopard Symposium series.  These, along with field reports, popular articles, newspaper pieces and other literature were compiled in the bibliographic data base, most of them containing the full text of the original publications.  Once launched on the internet, specialists, as well as the general public, had a vast set of information at their finger tips.

Shortly after completion of the Survival Strategy, the on-line bibliography was turned over to the Snow Leopard Network for continued maintenance and improvement.  Recently the SLN added nearly 400 Russian language publications, all in full text.   They hope to add Chinese literature soon with other regional local-language publications to follow.

Disclaimer
The Snow Leopard Trust has compiled over 650 references and more than 300 full text documents, primarily of scientific nature, concerning the snow leopard and its habitat. This information has been compiled for the sole purpose of sharing and making the information more easily available to concerned individuals and our researchers overseas. Some of the full text documents were scanned and converted from hard copies using OCR software to save space on our server when electronic copies where not available. This process may have left some errors in the text which do not reflect upon the authors, but rather are a result of the conversion process alone. These documents are intended for reference only, as the OCR conversion process may have affected results presented in charts and graphs.
