Meet Tenger

Name: Tenger (Sky)
Sex: Female
Family: Tenger is Zaraa's mother

In the fall of 2010, our collaring team managed to equip both Tenger and her cub Zaraa with GPS collars, making them the first mother and daughter pair to be followed in our study - or anywhere. In the spring of 2011, they parted ways, and we were able to track Zaraa as she set out to find her own home range.

Tenger means Sky in Mongolian - but the significance of the name goes beyond that: It holds the meanings of spirit and power. Mongolians respect the sky as an eternal power and limitless entity. According to our Mongolia country director, Bayara Agvaantseren, Mongolian mythology says legendary leader Genghis Khan rose to power from the sky.
